A depilatory is a mixture in the form of a liquid or cream which is used to remove unwanted hair from the body. Depilatories are used to remove hair from the skin’s surface. An epilatory like waxing or tweezing removes hair from below the skin’s surface taking out the hair follicle.

Depilatories contain chemicals with a high degree of acidity like sodium thioglycolate, or calcium thioglycolate. They react with the protein structure of hair breaking it down. After applying the cream it may take 5 to 15 minutes to wash depending on the coarseness of hair.

Depilatories act as an exfolient due to which the dead skin cells on the surface of the skin are removed. These dead skin cells are accumulated everyday and they often feel rough. After removal of the dead skin cells the skin feels soft and smooth.
Most of the depilatories contain moisturizers like Baby Oil, Almond Oil, Green Tea Extract and Aloe which are responsible for soft smooth skin. A depilatory lotion or liquid is designed for larger areas of the body such as the legs and underarms.

Depilatory creams have thicker consistency so it can be applied to specific areas without the risk of it running on to skin. Therefore cream is ideal for the face.

Usually the results of depilatory creams last longer than using a razor. The chemicals in depilatories reach down into the pores of the skin thus removing hair below the level of the skin.
