Microwave is one type of device used for hair removal but it has no medically published data on its safety and effectiveness. It is strictly advised not to use the procedure for removing facial hairs. Even FDA has not cleared its use on face.

On October 25, 1999, FDA stated:

“The Microwave Medical Corporation, Microwave Delivery System (Model MMC-300) is designed for the removal of unwanted body hair except on facial areas. [Emphasis FDA’s]

This device is not for use on facial areas. Clinical data to date is not sufficient to demonstrate safety or effectiveness on facial areas.”

In this procedure microwave radiations are sent into the skin through a hand piece. The energy generated from the radiations causes thermal damage.

Microwave hair removal treatment promoters claim that the procedure delivers controlled and precise radiations to the hair follicles. They also claim that the radiations only cause damage to the hair follicles with out damaging the skin. But a lot of disapprovals, warnings and no clinical approvals suggest that it is not a safe way for hair removal. It is also reported that microwaves destroy tissues, fat, sugars and other essential structures of the skin and pose a potential threat to health. So all these things suggests that it is wise to avoid this method of hair removal until there is any published clinical data showing the procedure and the devices are safe for hair removal as well as skin.
