As compared to other hair removing methods shaving is the oldest and simplest hair removal method. It is believed that during World War II shaving became popular. The major reason behind its popularity was shortage in nylon stocking stock. With the advent of new hair removal methods like waxing, laser, epilation, etc. the popularity of shaving has decreased.
Shaving is considered to be a hassle; even the results are not satisfactory. Here are some effective shaving tips that will ensure smooth and satisfactory results.
- Make sure that prior to shaving your skin is wet. This is essential as it reduces the risk of nicks.
- It is advisable to exfoliate your skin before shaving. This ensures removal of dead skin cells which otherwise would have clogged your razor hence preventing a close and smooth shave.
- Every time you shave make sure that you use sharp and clean razor.
- Avoid using soap before shaving as it makes your skin dry hence resulting in poor shaves.
- Make sure that you opt for right shaving tool. It is better to select a razor with pivoting heads, lubricated heads and spring mounted multiple blades. Before selecting a particular razor you can experiment or can ask your friends.
- Opt for shaving gels or creams that have moisturizer. Moisturizer will help in keeping your skin hydrated and supple. It is better to opt for fragrance-free creams as it reduces the chance of irritation.
- Make sure that you apply equal pressure while shaving. Remember to shave in opposite direction of the hair growth.
- In case shaving underarms, you can follow any direction as underarm hair grows in every possible direction.
- Make sure that you change blades, cartridges or razors on a regular basis. A dull and blunt blade increases the risk of nicks and irritation.
- After shaving apply moisturizer or body lotion to hydrate your skin. It is better to avoid creams and lotion with AHA because it can cause irritation on freshly shaven skin.
- After shaving you can even apply astringent containing salicylic acid as it reduces the risk of ingrown hairs.
- For better and smooth shaving results it is better to shave after shower.
- It is advisable to avoid repeated strokes of razor over the same area numerous times. Repeated razor strokes make your skin susceptible to irritation.
- It is better to avoid shaving immediately after getting up from sleep. The main reason is that the body fluid makes your skin puffy hence making shaving difficult.
- In case you face the problem of ingrown hair it is better to visit your dermatologist immediately.
- After shaving it is better to avoid swimming, surfing, and sun exposure. Your freshly shaven skin is highly sensitive hence exposure to sun and chlorine might cause irritation.
- It is better to avoid wearing tight clothes after shaving.
